Casper — Dachshund Studio Portraits at Bentwaters

Casper came in for a studio portrait session at my Bentwaters studio. He’s a dachshund with a lot going on — alert, watchful, and not especially interested in sitting still unless there was a good reason to.

The Session

That kind of temperament keeps you on your toes, but it also produces good portraits. A dog that’s engaged and looking around gives you expression and life in the images. A dog that’s too compliant can look flat.

We worked through the session at Casper’s pace, which was brisk. The images that came out best are the ones where he was caught mid-look, attention fixed on something just off-camera. Those are often the most natural portraits.

The Portraits

The session produced a good set of images. Casper’s alertness and energy come through clearly, which gives the portraits something to look at beyond just technical correctness.
