Sausage Dog Photography at the Bentwaters Studio
I photographed Bev and her dachshund at my studio at Bentwaters, near Woodbridge in Suffolk. The session was straightforward: a classic studio portrait using a dark background to let the dog’s coat and expression do the work.
The Setup
For this session I used a near-black backdrop and directional lighting to bring out the shape of the dog’s coat and the detail in the face. Dachshunds with dark coats need careful lighting to avoid losing definition, so I positioned the main light to separate the dog from the background and used a secondary light to pick out the texture along the body.
The result is a portrait that feels considered rather than decorative. The dark background keeps the attention on the dog, and the lighting gives the image enough depth to work well as a print.
Studio Sausage Dog Portraits
A studio session gives you control that location work doesn’t. The lighting is consistent, the background is clean, and there are no distractions. For a breed like the dachshund, where character tends to come through in small expressions and the tilt of the head, that control matters.
Sessions take place at my studio at Bentwaters, which is easy to reach from Woodbridge, Ipswich, Saxmundham and the surrounding area. If you would like to discuss a portrait session for your dachshund, you can get in touch to talk through what you have in mind.
