Ralph — Sausage Dog Studio Portrait Session

Ralph arrived at the studio with one thing on his mind: treats. Which, as it turns out, is exactly the kind of motivation that makes for a great portrait session.

He’s a miniature dachshund with the kind of quiet confidence you don’t often see in a dog that low to the ground. Floppy ears, a deliberate way of moving, and a very clear sense of what he wanted from the morning. His owner Chloe brought him in for a classic studio portrait, and he took to the session immediately once he understood that cooperation was being rewarded.

Working with Ralph

The treat approach works well with dachshunds. They are food-motivated dogs and once they understand the exchange, you can get good, attentive expressions without a lot of effort. The challenge is keeping the session varied enough that you get something more than a dog staring at a treat held above the camera.

With Ralph I worked through a range of positions, using Chloe to help settle him between setups and get his attention at the right moments. The best frames came when he was relaxed enough to be himself rather than alert and waiting.

The Portraits

I used a clean background and soft directional lighting for this session. Ralph has a smooth coat in a classic tan and black, and the lighting was set to show the coat colour accurately and bring out the detail in his face without flattening it.

The portraits have a classic, straightforward quality that suits the breed well. Nothing elaborate, just a well-lit dog looking like himself.

Studio Dachshund Portraits

Ralph is a good example of how well dachshunds photograph in a studio setting. The breed has a distinctive shape and a lot of expression, and a controlled environment lets you make the most of both.
